Violence has multiple forms … (2/11)

Physical, psychological, verbal, emotional, sexual, economic … violence manifests itself in many different ways.

  • Thus, a woman may be harmed physically: slaps, punches, kicks, abuse, strangulation. Her husband might use any object during the attack: cigarette burns, whipped with a belt, use or threat of a weapon such as a knife, rifle, tools, etc.

  • But domestic violence can also consist of denigrating, humiliating, degrading the woman in her value as an individual or manifest itself as verbal attacks, fits of jealousy, threats, monitoring her activities, attempts to isolate her from her family and friends, going as far as sequestration.
  • It might happen that the woman was subjected to non-consensual sexual relations and/or by force, possibly accompanied by physical brutality, insults, humiliating pornographic scenarios, even gang rape.

A man forcing a woman to have non-consensual sexual relations with him is committing a rape if there is penetration (legally, it is considered a felony), a sexual aggression if there isn't penetration (legally, it's considered a misdemeanor), - even if the two people are married.

  • Finally, violence of an economic nature might be used, bringing about a loss of essential resources or assets for the woman, an audit or plundering, sometimes even while the woman has a remunerated activity.
