A high psychological and family cost (4/11)

Domestic violence has very serious immediate as well as long term effects on all members of the family and each person suffers the consequences physically and emotionally as well as socially.

Children living in a milieu where violence presides are generally present during incidents, sometimes beaten or threatened themselves.

Their emotional balance and their physical health are put into danger by the scenes of violence and the tense atmosphere which reigns in the house: a feeling of insecurity, of vulnerability, of guilt, behaviour problems, difficulties at school (concentration problems, conflicts with other children, violence …), and somatic repercussions

You can usefully help your children

by consulting a psychologist or a

child psychiatrist with them at a

Medico-Psycho Educational Center

(free - reimbursed by social security).

Adolescents sometimes assume a lot of responsibility within their family, wanting to protect their mother and/or their younger brothers and sisters. Certain are faced with deep psychological stress which can sometimes translate into running away, suicide attempts, alcohol and legal or illegal drug use.

The risk exists that in the long term, certain develop a high level of tolerance to violence and accept this behavior as normal means of expression and conflict resolution; or that others interiorize their experience, with a tendency for depression and to close up with a feeling of despair and helplessness.

Women victims of violence sometimes hesitate to reveal their situation to institutional personnel for fear of having their children removed. This threat can be used by a violent spouse.

Such measures (children entrusted to the Children's Social Aid [Aide Sociale à l'Enfance] by a family court judge) are rare and must be motivated by a situation of established serious danger for the children themselves.

Aside from this case, you have no reason to fear their removal because you leave the conjugal home. Just the opposite, your children's protection can justify your departure. Don't hesitate to contact a specialized service (see here) anonymously.
